Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has said that the NDC government is allowing illegal mining to happen. He says that letting the Gold Board (GoldBod) buy gold from small-scale miners is a way to fund galamsey. He noted in Parliament when talking about the 2026 Budget that this action goes against the government’s declared plans to stop unlawful mining and offers the government support for enterprises that aren’t authorized. He also spoke about the risks that people suffer when they combat galamsey, bringing up the eight deaths that happened during a program launch. He also said that the government doesn’t seem to be serious or committed enough to stop illicit mining. Afenyo-Markin said that buying gold that can’t be tracked or authenticated just makes people more likely to get involved in crime instead of enforcing the law.
