A STATESMAN’S PROMISE KEPT – AFENYO-MARKIN’S DONATION TO GBC STANDS AS A MODEL OF LEADERSHIP
On 3rd February 2026, Ghana witnessed a clear demonstration of responsible leadership, patriotism, and respect for national institutions when the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, fulfilled his promise to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) with a major donation of computers to strengthen its operations.
True leadership is measured not by words alone, but by action. Hon. Afenyo-Markin donated 10 laptops to GBC’s Digital Platforms Department and 10 desktop computers to the GBC Newsroom, directly enhancing the Corporation’s capacity to deliver timely, credible, and technology-driven public broadcasting. This was not a symbolic gesture; it was a practical intervention aimed at improving productivity in one of Ghana’s most critical public institutions.
This donation followed his visit to GBC on Friday, 31st January 2026, after an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, where he observed firsthand the operational challenges facing the Digital Platforms Department. Rather than issue excuses or make vague promises, Hon. Afenyo-Markin made a clear commitment, and within days, he delivered. That speed of action alone sets him apart in Ghana’s political history.
Importantly, Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s donation was his personal contribution, not one drawn from state resources. This point matters. It underscores his deep personal conviction that public institutions must be supported, strengthened, and respected regardless of whether one sits in government or opposition. That is statesmanship.
In an era where politics is often reduced to noise, Hon. Afenyo-Markin has consistently demonstrated substance. As Minority Leader, he has distinguished himself as principled, bold, and development-focused, using his influence to advocate for institutions that serve the national interest. Supporting GBC, the country’s oldest and most authoritative public broadcaster, is an investment in democracy, accountability, and national cohesion.
Historically, Ghana has benefitted most when leaders rise above partisanship to support institutions that inform, educate, and unite the people. Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s intervention fits squarely within that noble tradition. His action sends a powerful message: public service does not stop at Parliament; it extends to practical support for national development.
This contribution will directly improve newsroom efficiency, strengthen digital content delivery, and enhance GBC’s ability to serve millions of Ghanaians. It is a reminder that impactful leadership is deliberate, timely, and people-centered.
Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has once again proven why he stands out as one of the most distinguished Members of Parliament and political leaders of this era. Ghana needs more leaders who see a problem, make a promise, and deliver without delay, without excuses, and without seeking applause.
This is leadership worth commending.
