Ablakwa Hails AU Backing for Slavery Reparations (Mahama to Table Landmark UN Resolution)

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, has praised John Dramani Mahama and the country for getting all African Union (AU) member states to support a historic UN resolution that calls for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, including the return of stolen cultural artifacts. Mr. Ablakwa wrote on X that the move was a continental achievement and that President Mahama is likely to try to get it passed at the 50th CARICOM Summit on February 24, 2026, before formally presenting it to the United Nations General Assembly on March 26, 2026. He praised the work of officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a group of global experts and activists, calling the event a diplomatic milestone and a sign of African unity, moral leadership, and a new commitment to changing the continent’s development path.
