34% of Ghana has no health insurance, Akandoh’s new plan makes primary care free for everyone, insured or not.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, has said that the government’s new Free Primary Healthcare policy is meant to help millions of Ghanaians who are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme. On the Citi Breakfast Show on April 22, he said that even though NHIS coverage has gone up from 57% to about 66%, about 12 million people, or 34% of the population, are still uninsured and have to pay for basic care out of their own pockets. He said that the new policy aims to close this gap by making primary healthcare services available to everyone, regardless of their insurance status. This will remove financial barriers that keep people from getting treatment early. The program will focus on frontline services provided by community-level facilities like clinics, health centers, and CHPS compounds. This will make sure that more people can get the basic healthcare they need across the country.
