CDM: Gov’t Violates Constitution (30,000 Empty Classrooms, 60,000 Unemployed Teachers)

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) says that the government is not doing its job under Article 25(1)(a) of the Constitution to make sure that all children have access to Free, Compulsory, and Universal Basic Education (FCUBE). They point to the fact that there are more than 30,000 classrooms without teachers across the country. The group said that the situation was not only a failure of policy but also a direct violation of Ghana’s constitutional duties. They said that free education is useless without teachers in the classroom. CDM also criticized the fact that more than 60,000 trained teachers are still unemployed while students are not getting the education they need. They said this shows that the system is inefficient and that the government needs to publish clear timelines for hiring and take clear, decisive steps to restore public trust in the education system.
