Deportation or extradition? Clinton breaks down how two separate U.S. legal tracks could send Ofori-Atta anywhere, not necessarily Ghana.

Amanda Clinton, Head of Chambers at Clinton Consultancy, has said that the immigration and extradition cases in the US involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta can happen at the same time and have a big impact on each other, even though they are legally separate. She said on Joy FM’s “Midday News” that immigration proceedings will decide if he can stay in the U.S., and extradition will decide if he goes back to Ghana to face charges. She made it clear that courts look at each process separately, but the results of one can affect the other. For example, an approved extradition request would usually take precedence over deportation, but a deportation order issued first could let U.S. authorities choose where he goes, which may not be Ghana. Her comments come before the April 27 hearing, when the U.S. Department of Justice is expected to present Ghana’s request for extradition. The judge will then look at Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal status and decide what to do next.
