Don’t trade your cocoa farm for a galamsey pit, Opoku warns farmers: short-term cash isn’t worth long-term ruin
Isaac Yaw Opoku, a member of Parliament’s Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee and the MP for Offinso South, has told cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Region not to give their farms to illegal miners (galamsey operators) even though they are getting more and more frustrated with the government’s slow payments. He said during a visit by the Minority Caucus to look into problems in the sector that leaving cocoa farms or renting them out for illegal mining could hurt people’s jobs and the environment in the long run. He told farmers to be patient and not do anything that could hurt the industry. He also asked President John Dramani Mahama to quickly address their concerns and make things better in the cocoa sector.
