DOUBLE STANDARDS EXPOSED: NDC’S HYPOCRISY ON ANTI-LGBTQ LAW IS A NATIONAL DISGRACE!

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has behaved with the worst kind of political double standards and hypocrisy in Ghana’s current anti-LGBTQ law saga, and the Ghanaian people must call it out. When the NDC was in opposition, its MPs, led vigorously by Hon. Samuel Nartey George (now Communications Minister), championed the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill with relentless zeal. They spoke, marched, rallied religious leaders, and pressured the then-NPP government to pass the law that would criminalize LGBTQ activities. That was clear and loud political activism.

In the 8th Parliament, the bill was passed by Parliament on 28 February 2024, with pro-NDC MPs playing the lead role. But here is where the hypocrisy begins: the bill was never enacted into law because it expired when the 8th Parliament dissolved, since it had not been assented to by the then-President.

Now, fully a year into the NDC government with a two-thirds parliamentary majority, the same NDC that wanted the law is failing to ensure it becomes law. According to the Parliamentary Minority, the NDC government is deliberately dragging its feet and frustrating the process, refusing to facilitate a swift passage of a law it once demanded be passed.

This is not mere political disagreement; this is a politician’s promise turned into a public embarrassment. When Hon. Sam George was a private-member sponsor of the bill in opposition, he was loud, forceful, and clear that it must be passed. Today, as part of the governing party, the NDC is not pushing it with the same intensity and is engaging in procedural delays. That is a stark contrast between words and actions, revealing blatant inconsistency.

Where is the commitment? Where is the urgency? Where are the moral convictions that were once trumpeted by NDC voices? The NDC now stands on the side of bureaucratic hesitation and, in doing so, shows that their opposition stance was nothing but opportunistic politics. Ghana deserves leaders with consistency, integrity, and a commitment to deliver on promises, not empty political grandstanding. The NPP stands firmly for the will of Parliament and the will of the people. We call on the NDC to stop the hypocrisy, fast-track the bill if they truly believe in it, and stop treating national priorities as political theatre.
