Duty Waiver Shock! Gov’t Grants One Tax-Free Car to Foreign Service Officers

A new policy authorizing the elimination of import taxes and customs on a single car for foreign service personnel returning from abroad assignments was announced by President John Dramani Mahama.During the commissioning of eleven recently appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners on Tuesday, November 19, he made the news.President Mahama claims that the program is a component of the government’s larger endeavors to improve the effectiveness of Ghana’s overseas missions and fortify the foreign service.”We acknowledge that in order for diplomats to fulfill their responsibilities, they need adequate assistance. The government has thus authorized improved terms of service for all of our ambassadors serving overseas.
In addition, he informed the envoys, “for foreign service officers returning from overseas service, the cabinet has approved a waiver of import duties and taxes on one vehicle.”However, President Mahama pointed out that the duty waiver had some restrictions.
