ECOWAS Sounds Global Alarm! Calls on UN to Join Fight Against Rising Terror in West Africa
To help West African nations combat the growing wave of terrorist attacks in the area, ECOWAS has urged the UN and its international partners to work together more closely and provide more assistance. The petition follows calls for increased security measures after previous attacks on Nigerian churches that resulted in many fatalities. ECOWAS called on the international community to deny myths that terrorist organizations target certain religious populations in a statement issued on November 4. The statement emphasized that extremists kill citizens of all religions, including Christians, Muslims, and others, without discrimination. The regional group urged for coordinated international action to combat the danger and reiterated that terrorism in West Africa cuts across religious, ethnic, and gender lines. In response to the killings, former US President Donald Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to safeguard Christian communities and ordered the Pentagon to start preparing for a possible military action in Nigeria.
