Egyapa Mercer: Bawumia Set for 65%+ Win in NPP Primaries—Strongest Path to Party Unity
Andrew Egyapa Mercer, a former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, is very hopeful about the chances of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries. He says that he expects Dr. Bawumia to get more than 65 percent of the total votes. Mr. Egyapa Mercer said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program that he would be “very surprised” if the former Vice President doesn’t reach that margin. He pointed to what he called steadily growing and consolidating support for Dr. Bawumia across the party’s grassroots and leadership structures.
He says that the level of excitement and support for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy shows that there is a clear preference within the party, based on confidence in his experience, vision, and ability to lead the NPP into the future. He said that feedback from party members in different parts of the country shows that there is a strong belief that Dr. Bawumia is still the best choice for the party going into the next election cycle.
Mr. Egyapa Mercer’s comments come after 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates publicly backed Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, 2026. He said that the number of endorsers is likely to grow to about 142. He said that some supporters weren’t counted at first because of problems with logistics and coordination.
He went on to say that the group made the decision to endorse after a lot of thought and consideration, especially after the NPP’s performance in the 2024 general elections. He said that the former parliamentary candidates looked at the kind of leadership the party needed to reorganize, reenergize, and reposition itself for victory, and they all agreed that Dr. Bawumia was the best person for the job. He said that their choice was based on Dr. Bawumia’s leadership skills, national appeal, policy ideas, and understanding of the country’s economic and governance problems.
Mr. Egyapa Mercer was quick to say that the endorsement is not meant to put down or hurt other party members who are running for office. Instead, he said it shows that the group believes Dr. Bawumia is the best and most qualified person to lead the NPP forward, bring its base together, and win back the trust of the Ghanaian people before the next national elections.
