Ex-MP Slams NDC: 1.3 Million Jobless Despite 24-Hour Economy Promise!

Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom, has criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he says is a rise in job losses and unemployment in the country. Dr. Kissi said on JoyNews’ AM Show on December 31, 2025, that Ghana’s biggest problem right now is job losses. He said that more than 1.3 million people are currently out of work. He says that the situation gets even worse when you look at the full picture of layoffs under the current administration, which includes both formal and informal layoffs. He was disappointed, especially with the government’s widely publicized 24-hour economy plan, which was supposed to create more jobs by adding shifts and extending working hours. He said, “For a government that promised a 24-hour economy, one would expect more jobs, not layoffs.” He also said that Ghana has been “scandalized” in the first year of the NDC administration. Dr. Kissi also talked about his worries about how the government handles its money and taxes. He said that even though taxes paid by citizens go into the Consolidated Fund, the government still has the power to decide how to spend the money and pay people. He asked why some taxes, like the COVID-19 tax, were getting rid of at a time when nurses and doctors are said to be owed several months of back pay. He said that the COVID-19 tax was first put in place to help healthcare infrastructure and make services better, and that people shouldn’t ignore it just because of its name. Dr. Kissi also talked about problems in the health sector, saying that reports of ambulances not having basic supplies like oxygen were embarrassing for the country. He also said that even if the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration stole money from the COVID-19 levy, the current government has the duty and authority to use the money it has to meet important needs. He stressed that “Now that you are in power and getting these revenues, it is your duty to use them wisely and where they are most needed.”
