From HIPC debt relief to Dagbon peace, Kufuor says Otumfuo’s gold coin should have been a Nobel Prize.

The Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin, which came out in 2021, was given to important people and organizations as a way to honor their work and connection to the legacy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Asantehene and three former and current Presidents of Ghana were among the most well-known recipients. Otumfuo said he accepted the coin on behalf of Asanteman and the country. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the gesture was a fitting tribute and thanked the Asantehene for his important role in bringing lasting peace to Dagbon. John Agyekum Kufuor, a former president, praised Otumfuo’s role in ending the Dagbon conflict. He said that if similar efforts had been made in Europe or America, Otumfuo would have won a Nobel Peace Prize. He also said that Otumfuo helped Ghana get about $4 billion in debt relief through the HIPC program. Former President John Dramani Mahama also praised the Asantehene for helping Ghana get the 2016 IMF program. He called the Asantehene an important person in the country’s democratic development who always gives good advice during times of national crisis.
