Ghana Water Faces GH¢2bn Arrears (Half of Daily Supply Lost, Service Expansion Hindered)
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) says that customer debts of about GH¢2 billion are hurting its cash flow and making it hard for it to expand services and improve infrastructure, even though a lot of water is going unaccounted for across the country. The company makes about 220 million gallons of water every day, but only 106 million gallons are accounted for. This means that 114 million gallons are missing. In Accra alone, there is a weekly shortfall of 73 million gallons against a demand of 210 million gallons. At the start of the Revenue Enhancement Teams on February 4, Managing Director Adam Mutawakilu said that the losses are due to both technical problems, like old pipes that are responsible for about 32% of non-revenue water, and commercial problems, like illegal connections, meter bypassing, billing problems, and water theft, which make up the bigger part.
