Mahama: Ghana to Exit IMF Programme with Dignity—Focus Now on Self-Reliance!

President John Dramani Mahama said that Ghana is getting ready to leave the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program “with dignity.” He said this is because the country’s macroeconomic stability has improved and it is less reliant on outside help. He said in his New Year’s speech on January 1, 2026, that reforms made since Ghana joined the IMF program in 2023, when inflation was high, the cedi was weak, and debt was rising, have strengthened key indicators, such as lower inflation, more stable currency, and higher business confidence. He said that debt renegotiations have been finished on terms that protect Ghana’s sovereignty and that the country is leaving the program as a credible partner, not a beggar. President Mahama said that the IMF program helped stabilize the economy, but his government is still focused on making sure that Ghana comes out of the program stronger and financially independent.
