Small-Scale Miners Urge Politicians: Protect ASM Gold Gains, Avoid Partisan Attacks!
Source: Joyonline
The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has asked politicians to protect the progress made in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold sector. They warned against politicizing the issue and making decisions based only on short-term financial losses. On January 1, 2026, GNASSM released a statement signed by its General Secretary, Godwin Nickleson Armah. The statement said that even though the Bank of Ghana lost money from ASM gold trading in both 2024 and 2025 under different administrations, ASM gold exports rose sharply from 63.6 metric tons in 2024 to 101 metric tons by December 23, 2025. The group said that ASM gold trading has bigger benefits for the economy, society, and governance than just looking at the yearly profit and loss numbers. They praised the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) for cleaning up the gold trade and making sure miners get fair prices. They also asked parliamentarians to stay united and non-partisan in their support of GoldBod and other organizations that help Ghana’s economy and foreign exchange position.
