Spain Moves to Ban Under-16s from Social Media (Age Checks, Tougher Rules Ahead)
Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, said that children under 16 will not be able to use social media. He said that platforms will have to put in place systems to check users’ ages. At the World Government Summit in Dubai on February 3, Sanchez talked about keeping kids safe from the “digital Wild West.” He also promised to introduce a new bill next week that would make social media companies responsible for illegal or hateful content. This move comes after Australia recently decided to put a similar ban in place. Other countries, like Britain and France, are also watching to see if they will follow suit with similar age-based restrictions.
