Teacher Training Crisis Erupts! CETAG Walks Out Nationwide Over Gov’t ‘Broken Promises

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called for an indefinite strike starting on Monday, November 24, 2025. They say the government has not completely carried out the National Labour Commission (NLC) arbitral ruling from May 2, 2023.The strike affects all 46 Colleges of Education in the nation. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of CETAG made the decision with the help of the National Council at an emergency meeting on November 19, 2025.The group says that the government has not done anything, thus it has no choice except to stop all services at the country’s 46 Colleges of Education. CETAG’s main complaints are that 39 colleges didn’t pay for all of the extra work they did in 2022, and that they only paid the Accra College of Education part of the money they owed. They also owe money for the Book and Research Allowance for the 2023/2024 and 2022/2023 academic years. The group also talked about the overdue Book and Research Top-up payments for the 2021/2022 school year that Akrokerri College of Education owes, as well as the demotion of some experienced teachers with master’s degrees, which they said was a violation of agreed-upon working conditions and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).Maxwell Bunu, the National President of CETAG, and Fidelis Kamaayi, the National Secretary, said in a statement that the strike is a valid reaction to the government’s failure to follow through on agreements and respect legally enforceable labor laws. They made it clear that CETAG members would not go back to teaching or supervising students until all of their complaints are adequately dealt with. The Association said again that it is committed to high-quality teacher education, but it also said that its members would not put up with any more exploitation or disrespect. CETAG is asking the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the Government of Ghana to act quickly and honestly to settle the disagreements.
