Election Battle: Minority Defends Nyindam’s 3,734-Vote Victory After Court Overturns Results
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed its concerns over the High Court verdict that invalidated the results of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Kpandai Constituency. They maintain that the election was conducted in a fair manner and that the outcome accurately represented the desires of the electorate. On Monday, November 24, the caucus issued a statement in which it noted that the member of parliament in question, Mathew Nyindam, won the election by a margin of 3,734 votes. The caucus also alleged that, after the announcement of the results of the presidential election, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who was the parliamentary candidate for the NDC, showed up at the collation center with supporters in an attempt to interfere with the process. This resulted in the destruction of ballot boxes and the creation of security risks. The Electoral Commission was forced to move the final declaration to its regional headquarters in the city of Tamale, according to what they had to say about this scenario. Mr. Nyindam was proclaimed the victor in this election, with 27,947 votes, while Mr. Wakpal received 24,213. The announcement, which was signed by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is the Minority Leader, included the additional information that the NDC candidate subsequently filed a lawsuit challenging the results. The grounds for the lawsuit were that he had not been present in the city of Tamale and that there had been minor technical mistakes at a total of forty-one voting stations. The minority said that, even in the case that Mr. Wakpal were given all of the roughly 500 votes that were contested, he would still have lost the election by more than 3,000 votes.
