Road Works Stalled! Afenyo-Markin Blasts Gov’t Over Delay in Road Fund Board—Contractors Unpaid, Projects Halted, Businesses Suffer. Urges Swift Action to Fix Crisis!
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is the Minority Leader and also serves as the Member of Parliament for Effutu, has spoken out against the government’s inability to establish the Road Fund Board, citing the fact that the government has not been able to come together to create this board as the reason for the disruption of payments to contractors and the damage to companies. He made the following statement to the members of Parliament on December 2, 2025: “A large number of contractors have taken out loans from banks, but they are unable to pay their employees and are being compelled to stop their operations as a result.” In addition to demanding that the government expedite the payment of debts owed to contractors and the establishment of the Road Fund Board, he questioned the reasons for the government’s failure to nominate suitable board members in spite of the fact that it had made changes to the legislation in order to provide support to the board’s work. He noted that, despite the fact that the government has set aside 5.3 billion Ghana cedis for the Ministry of Roads for the year 2026, the sum is insufficient when taking into consideration the existing arrears. In response, the Minister of Roads, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said that the administration has already paid off more than six billion Ghana cedis in outstanding debts that were carried over from the previous administration. The Road Fund Board is responsible for overseeing the Road Fund, which provides funding for the upkeep and development of roads.
