Transport Minister Declares War on Chaos: Automated Buses to Rule the Roads
Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Ghana’s Transport Minister and MP for Saboba, has started a tech-driven revamp of the state transport system to fix problems with the old manual cash collection at the State Transport Company (STC) and Metro Mass Transit (MMT). A key part of the 2026 bus upgrade is a digital payment system in partnership with Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), which will make sure ticket money goes straight into the bank’s accounts, cutting down on losses. The new buses will also have real-time tracking and passenger-counting technology to monitor usage and revenue, helping to stabilize these struggling faced by the state transport operators. Beyond these matters, Minister Nikpe highlighted improving road discipline, including new traffic signals and tougher rules for motorbike riders, coordinated with the Interior, Local Government, and Roads and Highways ministries. The program’s progress will be measured when the first 150 buses arrive in early 2026, and it could become a blueprint for improving other state-owned companies.
