“NDC’s Kwetey Slams Third-Term Calls—Labels Them ‘Pure Sycophancy’

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken out against party members who want President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third term. He called these calls the height of sycophancy.

Mr. Kwetey told a group that he is becoming more and more worried about what he sees as a growing culture of too much praise and unquestioning loyalty within the party.

He says that some people think that the only way to stay relevant or get ahead is to flatter party leaders.

He said, “These days it makes me sad to see sycophancy creep into our party.” “You see a group of people who think that the only way they can stay alive is to praise their leader.” That’s why some of those people are even saying things like “there should be a third term.”

He completely ignored these calls, calling them “nothing but sycophancy pure sycophancy and boot-licking of the highest order.”

Mr. Kwetey said that the NDC’s values do not support putting people on a pedestal at the expense of democratic values.

Mr. Kwetey said that party members never pushed Jerry John Rawlings, the late founder of the NDC, to run for a third term in office.

He said that this example from history shows how different the party’s founding values are from how some supporters act now.

He said, “No one ever told Jerry Rawlings, who started this party, to run for a third term.”

The General Secretary also said that people who want a third term are only doing it for their own benefit and not because they care about the party or the country.

“You have a lot of people who think that singing your praises will get them what they want,” he said. “You don’t love our party or our country.”

Mr. Kwetey reminded party members of the NDC’s main goal: to serve the needs of the Ghanaian people, not the goals of individuals.

He said, “It’s important to understand that this party was based on the need to work for our people.”
