Ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta Detained by US ICE—Legal Team Cites Health, Pending Status Case

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta because they have questions about his status in the US. His legal team says that he is fully cooperating while they work to resolve the issue quickly. His lawyers said that he has a pending petition for adjustment of status, which is a normal immigration process that lets someone stay in the country legally after their initial visa period ends. The news comes at a time when he is dealing with serious health problems that have kept him in the US since January 2025. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2025 and had a radical prostatectomy at the Mayo Clinic in June. He is also still dealing with post-COVID Multi-System Inflammatory Response Syndrome, which was diagnosed in 2021. The Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana filed corruption charges against Mr. Ofori-Atta in November 2025. The case is currently in the case management stage. His legal team says he is following the law and working to get his immigration status in order as he continues to recover from his medical issues.
