Atta Akyea Slams Political Interference in Justice—Calls for Rule of Law, Accountability

Samuel Atta Akyea, a former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and a key member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, has spoken out against what he calls politically motivated legal decisions made after the government changed. On JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, January 9, Atta Akyea expressed deep concern about changes in the justice system that he thinks put the rule of law in danger.

He was especially interested in why the Attorney General often used nolle prosequi to end criminal cases against public officials after a change in political power. Atta Akyea says that the Attorney General has the constitutional power to enter nolle prosequi, but using it in a selective or politically motivated way goes against the spirit of justice and makes it hard to trust the fairness and consistency of law enforcement. He said that these kinds of actions make it seem like justice depends on who is in charge of the government, not on the facts of each case.

Atta Akyea said that judicial independence must always be protected and that politics should not affect the courts or the prosecution. He warned that continued interference in legal proceedings could slowly damage people’s faith in the justice system and weaken democratic institutions. He said that political power should never protect someone from being prosecuted or held accountable for doing something wrong.

He also said that if Bawumia were to become president, due process would be followed and allowed to run its full course, no matter what someone’s political beliefs were. He said that even members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not be safe from investigation or prosecution if they were found to be involved in illegal activities. Atta Akyea concluded by reaffirming that the true test of democratic leadership lies in upholding the rule of law impartially and ensuring that justice is applied equally to all citizens.
