Zanetor Rawlings: Honour Dad’s Legacy—Choose Integrity, Service Over Monuments!
Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the NDC Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, has asked Ghanaians to follow the example of former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings and live by the values of honesty, responsibility, service, dedication to country, and integrity. She said that living by these values would be the best way to honor his memory, since he would rather be remembered in people’s hearts than through monuments.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings said these things at a ceremony in Keta to unveil a statue of her father. Traditional leaders, government officials, NDC executives, MPs, and other important people were there. She hoped that future generations would understand how important the monument is and be inspired by Rawlings’ life and work. She also said that even though the family was still grieving, they felt they had to honor the occasion for the sake of the country.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the chairman of the NDC, said that countries should honor their leaders. He said that even though Rawlings didn’t want monuments while he was alive, the statue helps teach younger generations about his legacy and contributions to the country’s growth. He also said again that the party had decided to call its national headquarters the Jerry John Rawlings House.
Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, Deputy CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, spoke on the theme “The Man, Jerry Rawlings.” He talked about Rawlings’ role in promoting democratic stability, coastal livelihoods, fisheries, and environmental justice. He also mentioned that Rawlings’ peaceful transfer of power after two elected terms is one of his lasting legacies.
