Ghana Embassy Confirms Ofori-Atta Detention in US—Vows Consular Support Amid Public Concern
The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC, has confirmed that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Mr. Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta. In a statement released on Saturday, January 10, 2025, the embassy said that it became aware of the situation and immediately took steps to verify the circumstances. The Embassy said that consular officials officially contacted the right U.S. detention center to ask to see Mr. Ofori-Atta, following diplomatic and international rules. However, they were told that he did not want to meet with them at that time and would only do so in the presence of his lawyer. “The Embassy of Ghana is still in touch with the right US authorities and will keep a close eye on the situation,” the statement said. It also said that efforts are still being made to make sure his rights are fully respected. However, no information was given about why he was detained or how long he would be held, as this news has sparked interest in Ghana and among the Ghanaian diaspora in the US.
