Court Joins DVLA Plate Contractor to Lawsuit (Embossment Case Adjourned to Feb 6!)

The Vehicle Embossment Manufacturers Association of Ghana (VEMAG) and others have filed a case against the DVLA for using only one company instead of licensed embossers. The High Court in Accra has added Original Manufacturers and Embossment Company Limited, the company that the DVLA has hired to make vehicle number plates starting in 2026, as a second defendant. Justice Isaac Addo approved the joinder on January 23, 2026, because neither side objected. He told the plaintiffs to change their writ and serve the new defendant. The case was then put off until February 6, 2026. The plaintiffs want to stop the DVLA from putting out new or digital number plates until the court makes a decision. They say that giving both manufacturing and embossment to one company is unprecedented, while the DVLA says that the system is within its mandate to make vehicle registration better. The company that joined the case said it was interested in the outcome.
