Nhyiaeso MP: Economic Gains Owe to Past Gov’t (We’re Reaping the Fruits of Earlier Reforms)
Dr. Stephen Amoah, the Nhyiaeso MP, says that the current government’s policies are not to blame for Ghana’s recent economic improvements; instead, they are the result of policies from the previous government that took a long time to work. On January 27, he talked about how inflation has dropped from 54.1% to 22.9%, GDP growth has gone up to 5.6% (provisionally over 7%), and investor confidence has gone up since the national elections. He said that these gains are the result of reforms that were made in the past. Dr. Amoah said that structural problems, the need for parliamentary approval, and IMF conditions have all made it hard for the current government to spend money. He also said that major programs, like scholarship programs, have not yet had a measurable effect. He said that blaming the current government for how the economy is doing is wrong and that Ghana is “enjoying the fruits of our labor” from policies that were put in place before.
