NHIA drops GH¢157m in two tranches, clears claims backlog to 2019, private facilities take biggest share.

The National Health Insurance Authority has disbursed more than GH¢157 million in claims to healthcare providers nationwide in two tranches — GH¢43.7 million on April 14, 2026, and GH¢113.6 million on April 30, 2026 — covering accrued unvetted claims dating back to 2019 and some vetted claims up to March 2026. According to the authority’s Claims Directorate, the payments are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted healthcare delivery under the National Health Insurance Scheme, with private facilities receiving the largest share, followed by public and mission facilities. High-volume facilities accounted for 64 per cent of the claims, clinics and health centres 23 per cent, Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) nine per cent, and specialised facilities four per cent. The NHIA reaffirmed its commitment to clearing arrears and strengthening the financial capacity of health facilities, following government measures such as the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy and the allocation of a record GH¢11 billion to the NHIS in the 2026 budget to support provider payments, essential medicines, and the Free Primary Healthcare initiative.
