Parliament Passes 24-Hour Economy Bill (New Authority to Drive Jobs, Productivity Boost)
The 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, was passed by Parliament to set up a regulatory body that will make Ghana’s 24-hour economy official and put it into action. This is part of the government’s plan to change the economy. The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme will be run by the authority. Its goals are to increase productivity, encourage growth that includes everyone, lower reliance on low-value raw material exports, and lower reliance on imported finished goods. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga said that the policy would create jobs through shift-based work, especially for young people. He also said that it would help make up for job losses caused by past economic problems, pointing to recent capital injections into state-owned banks. After Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai introduced the bill in December 2025, it got support from both parties. However, the Minority, led by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, raised concerns about overlapping functions with existing ministries and agencies and called for policy documents to be better timed for effective scrutiny.
