NTC Scraps Standalone Teacher Licensure Exam (Now Part of Trainees’ Final Assessment!)

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has said that the National Teacher Licensure Examination will no longer be given separately. Instead, it will be part of the final exams for teacher trainees. At a press conference in Accra on February 23, Board Chairman Emmanuel Kwame Alorvi said that the reform fulfills the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promise to get rid of the licensure exam in its current form by including it in trainees’ final year assessment. This means that they won’t have to wait a year after college. The new structure includes a 30 percent teaching practice component. This is different from the old structure, which had a six-hour written exam in literacy, numeracy, and professional skills but no practical assessment. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu set up a seven-member committee that suggested a three-tier implementation plan. This plan would include candidates who are retaking or waiting for the old exam, phasing out the old system in August 2025, integrating the new format for current trainees, and starting a screening process for people who want to go to college of education to deal with the high failure rates.
