Health Ministry: Invest in Biomedical Training (New Labs to Boost Diagnostics, System Strength)
Dr. Ignatius A.N. Awinibuno, the Ministry of Health’s Director for Allied Health, said in Accra on February 26 that Ghana needs to invest in biomedical engineering education in order to improve health systems and make sure that diseases are diagnosed correctly. He said this at the opening of upgraded bioinstrumentation labs as part of the “Upskilling Biomedical Engineers for Ghana” project, which was carried out by GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and supported by B. Braun, Delft Imaging, Draegerwerk, Sysmex, and Area 9 Lyceum through develoPPP. The University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have modern medical technologies like haematology analyzers, X-ray systems, dialysis machines, infusion and anesthesia machines, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools to improve hands-on training and make sure that the curricula meet the needs of healthcare delivery. This was done through a partnership between Ghanaian and German universities. Project representatives, including Prof. Dr. Torsten Wagner and Dr. Helene Widmer, said that the project will improve industry readiness, healthcare outcomes, local capacity, and job opportunities.
