Mahama: US-Israel-Iran Tensions Threaten Africa (Warns Oil Price Surge Could Hit Economies Hard)

President John Dramani Mahama has said that rising tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran could have big effects on Africa’s economy. He said the Middle East was the “epicenter of global oil supplies” at a meeting with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Arusha on March 2, 2026. He also warned that rising crude prices from the conflict would have a direct impact on African economies that depend on imported oil. The tensions are caused by Iran’s nuclear program, support for armed groups, and U.S.-Israel security operations. Counterstrikes have raised fears of a larger regional war, especially around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which could put even more strain on energy-importing countries across the continent.
