Eggs piling up, profits cracking, Kantamanto sellers now boil stock just to stay afloat as demand dries up.
Egg sellers at the Kantamanto Market in Accra are having a hard time because there aren’t enough people buying eggs, so a lot of them go bad. Some traders, who have been in the business for decades, say that the problem is caused by too much supply, which is partly due to fewer bulk purchases from institutions like senior high schools. This has made the market too full and forced sellers to take losses. Some wholesalers have started boiling eggs and selling them for less to cut down on waste. This has caused problems with “kosua ne mako” vendors who say the lower prices are hurting their profits. Even though crate prices have dropped a lot, sales are still slow, profit margins are getting smaller, and some retailers are leaving the business completely, while others are having a hard time staying afloat because of ongoing market disruptions.
