Gov’t Pledges Non-Interference in ORAL Trials (GH¢1.5bn Assets Seized, 140 Charged in Corruption Cases)
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has said that the government will not get involved in the judicial process when it comes to prosecuting corruption-related crimes as part of its anti-corruption initiative, Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL). The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP said that the government is committed to respecting the independence of the courts while also letting investigators build strong cases before going to court. This was in response to worries about the speed of investigations and prosecutions. He said that the National Democratic Congress, which is in charge now, had previously criticized the New Patriotic Party government for supposedly interfering with the courts. He stressed that the current government will not do the same thing. He said that the Attorney-General’s Department is in charge of 27 cases right now, and the Economic and Organized Crime Office is looking over about 40 more. He said that more than 140 people have been involved in the investigations, that assets worth more than GH¢1.5 billion have been seized, and that some suspects are already on trial.
