Dead fish at Tema Shipyard, authorities are testing, but the warning is clear: don’t eat, don’t harvest, until they say ‘all clear.

On April 6, 2026, a lot of fish died at the Tema Shipyard. This led to a joint investigation by the Food and Drugs Authority, Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Ghana Police Service’s CID. Dead fish were found early in the morning in a small area, so a rapid-response team was sent in. They have since collected 60–80 fish and water samples for lab testing, and there is no immediate evidence of sabotage or a widespread public health threat. Officials have told people to stay away from catching or eating fish from the affected area until an official “All-Clear” is given. They also say that properly cooked fish from certified sources is still safe. As investigations continue, people are also asked to report strange fish deaths and get medical help if they have symptoms after being around sick fish.
