Back with family, but still in legal crosshairs: Ofori-Atta freed from ICE custody as OSP probes await in Ghana.

Ken Ofori-Atta, a former finance minister, has been freed from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after a court order. His legal team says he is now back with his family in the United States. On April 8, 2026, solicitor Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo said that the detention was due to administrative “red flags” related to ongoing investigations by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). These investigations are looking into claims of corruption and abuse of office during his time in office, including issues related to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. His lawyers say that he entered the U.S. legally and that the ICE detention was due to procedural problems caused by international compliance alerts, not because he broke any U.S. laws. They also said that OSP travel-related orders played a role in the immigration review, but a court order finally got him out of jail. Ofori-Atta has said he will follow the law to protect his rights, and the OSP investigation in Ghana is still going on.
