Fuel relief continues, but diesel support trimmed from GH¢2.00 to GH¢1.07 as government walks a tightrope between consumers and costs.

The Government of Ghana has announced a continuation of its fuel pump intervention following a Cabinet meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama, revising its temporary relief measures to cushion consumers against rising petroleum prices driven by global market volatility; according to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the initial one-month relief package introduced on April 16, 2026—under which the government absorbed GH¢2.00 per litre on diesel and GH¢0.36 per litre on petrol—ended on May 15, 2026, and has now been adjusted with a new support level of GH¢1.07 per litre for diesel effective May 16, 2026, to maintain consumer protection while ensuring sustainable fuel supply, with the measure expected to run for two pricing windows subject to further review based on market conditions; the government said it will continue to monitor global trends and adjust its response accordingly, as consumers and industry players, including the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, continue to call for extended relief amid concerns over transport fares and inflationary pressures.
