Free Abronye now, Afenyo-Markin says BNI detention is ‘political persecution,’ not justice.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, from Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) custody, describing his detention as unconstitutional and politically motivated. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, he argued that Abronye DC’s arrest, prosecution and remand over alleged comments about a judge amounted to persecution rather than justice, and questioned the legality of his continued detention, including claims that no properly certified remand order had been produced. He further criticised the court’s refusal to grant bail, saying it violated constitutional protections and the presumption of innocence, while alleging a broader pattern of political intimidation against opposition figures. Abronye DC was remanded by Circuit Court 9 in Accra on May 13, 2026, on charges of offensive conduct conducive to breach of the peace and publication of false news, and is scheduled to reappear on May 27, 2026, with the prosecution opposing bail on the grounds that he could repeat the alleged offence if released.
