Ebola alert: Ghana is safe but not sleeping, Akandoh urges vigilance as WHO declares global emergency.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ghana’s Health Minister, has assured the public that the government is intensifying preventive measures against Ebola following the World Health Organization’s declaration of the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Speaking in Accra on May 21, he stated that Ghana remains Ebola-free despite reported outbreaks in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The minister explained that Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids and contaminated materials and urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding. He added that the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service have strengthened surveillance, screening and preparedness measures nationwide while encouraging strict adherence to hygiene protocols, including frequent handwashing and the use of sanitizers at public gatherings. He further assured Ghanaians that the country’s current Ebola risk level remains low.
