The Psychology of Envy

Envy begins when another person’s success becomes a measure of our own worth. Someone else’s achievements, recognition, influence or possessions can expose insecurities we have yet to confront. Instead of examining what we lack or what we need to improve, we may become preoccupied with what another person has gained.

The danger of envy lies in how quietly it redirects our attention. We begin studying another person’s progress more closely than our own, interpreting their success as a personal defeat and their recognition as something taken away from us. In that state of mind, even our own achievements can become difficult to appreciate.

The wiser response is to examine what another person’s success awakens in us. Sometimes envy reveals an ambition we have neglected, a skill we need to develop, or an insecurity we must overcome. Recognising this allows us to turn comparison into self-examination. Our frustration could lead us into purposeful action.

Someone else’s progress does not diminish your worth. Learn from what they have achieved, work on what you can improve, and give your own life the attention.
