Afenyo‑Markin Blasts Government for Lack of Transparency in Hurricane Relief Effort

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin has voiced worries about the government’s choice to send Ghanaian troops and relief supplies to Jamaica after a hurricane, saying that with many issues at home still unresolved, such overseas actions should have been more closely examined by Parliament. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, December 17, he criticised the lack of clear information about why this assistance was sent, how the supplies were bought, and which bodies handled the process, especially since communities in Ghana affected by flooding are struggling to get help. He pointed out that lawmakers were not properly briefed before the deployment of engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces and questioned whether resources should be prioritised abroad when domestic needs are pressing. While he agreed that Ghana should maintain good diplomatic relationships, he stressed that Parliament needs full details on the size, cost, and reasons behind these international efforts, and he faulted government officials for not involving the relevant parliamentary committees before the news became public, saying major decisions should not be learned about through press reports but discussed and approved in the House.
