Cabinet OKs Special Tribunals (To Speed Up Corruption, Illicit Wealth Cases Under ORAL)
Felix Kwakye Ofosu says that the Cabinet has agreed to bring back special tribunals to speed up cases of corruption and illegal wealth. This is meant to cut down on delays in the judicial system and make it easier to handle cases related to the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative. The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP said on Joy News’ PM Express that the Constitution allows for the creation of tribunals to handle ORAL-related cases and other illegal wealth cases that are putting too much strain on the courts. In response to criticism from some anti-corruption advocates, including former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, he said that investigative agencies have made progress since the Attorney General took office. He pointed to 27 dockets and about 40 more cases being looked at by the Economic and Organized Crime Office, more than 140 arrests, and the seizure of assets worth about 1.5 billion Ghana cedis, with several suspects already on trial. He also said that judges decide how quickly cases move through the courts once they are filed. He stressed that the government cannot control the courts and that its job is only to gather evidence, build strong cases, and present them to the courts.
