Barker-Vormawor to Challenge GH¢5.1m Defamation Ruling (Claims Unfair Trial Process)

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has said he will try to get the High Court’s March 2 ruling that he must pay GH₵5.1 million to former National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah for defamation thrown out because he thinks the process was unfair. Barker-Vormawor said that his lawyers were not allowed to finish cross-examination and that the court did not pay attention to his witness statement. Justice (Rev.) Joseph Owusu Adu-Agyeman of the High Court gave Kan Dapaah GH₵5 million in general damages and GH₵100,000 in costs. This was less than the GH₵10 million he had asked for. Barker-Vormawor said that after his first lawyer became Deputy Attorney General, he was given time to hire a new lawyer. However, the court later threw out his defense, denied motions to relist it, and refused to look at his witness statements before making its decision, which he publicly challenged.
