Finance Ministry: Mahama ‘Very Upset’ Over Truck Diversions (Gov’t Vows Customs Accountability)

Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the Deputy Minister for Finance, said that President John Dramani Mahama was “very upset” after being told about the interception of articulated trucks at Ghana’s borders that were thought to be avoiding taxes and making money. The Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division stopped trucks that were supposed to be carrying goods from Akanu to Niger via Kulungugu. They found that the trucks were breaking the law by moving goods without the required customs escorts. On February 23, 2026, Mr. Ampem spoke on the Citi Breakfast Show and said that the government is serious about holding customs officers accountable. They will reward those who help find problems and punish those who are involved. He also said that ongoing investigations will determine who is responsible, as authorities work harder to stop revenue leaks and make border enforcement stronger.
