From Farm to Fame: Mahama Crowns Eric Opoku One of Ghana’s Greatest Agriculture Ministers!

During the opening of a new vegetable development project in Asunafo South and the launching of a poultry and meat processing center in Bechem, President John Dramani Mahama lauded Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and agricultural, as one of the finest agricultural ministers in the history of Ghana. The Feed Ghana Programme, under the direction of Opoku, encourages the development of vegetables, greenhouse farming, irrigation-supported farming, and home gardening. In addition, the program works to revitalize poultry via programs like the Nkoko Nketenkete Program and a “Farm to Table” framework. In order to enhance the supply of feed, the Ministry is undertaking a number of initiatives, including the expansion of irrigation, the rehabilitation of dams, the provision of assistance for institutional farming, and the establishment of a soy processing facility. The goals of these initiatives are to increase the amount of food that is produced domestically, decrease the number of imports, provide employment opportunities, and turn the agricultural sector into a diversified, agro-industrial sector that is centered on food security and rural lives.
