GH¢40bn road debt, GH¢12bn paid, Agbodza tells contractors: ‘We’re not cancelling inherited projects, we’re fixing them.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has assured road contractors that the government will not suspend or cancel inherited road projects despite financial and contractual challenges facing the sector. He said the administration is committed to completing all the ongoing projects and settling all outstanding debts owed to contractors during a nationwide inspection tour in the Eastern Region on May 11, 2026. He said the government inherited close to GH¢40 billion in arrears in the road sector including interest but has paid about GH¢12 billion since coming into office. “Some projects have seen an escalation in costs due to scope and contractual issues, but the works that had stalled before the 2024 elections were ordered to continue under the current government policy,” he said. He said the approach was a departure from the previous practice of abandoning inherited projects and attempts were being made to reduce the arrears despite the fiscal constraints and limitations backed by the IMF.
