Gov’t Pays GH¢2.6bn to Settle NHIS Arrears (Akandoh Says Provider Confidence Restored)

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ghana’s Minister of Health, said that the government paid GH¢2.6 billion to the National Health Insurance Scheme in 2025 to settle unpaid claims and debts owed to healthcare providers. This cleared up debts that had built up over the years and restored providers’ trust. He also said in Parliament that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund has received the full amount of GH¢1.5 billion to improve healthcare delivery across the country. The payments are part of a larger effort to stabilize the NHIS, make sure hospitals, clinics, and other facilities get their money back on time, and make the scheme more financially stable. They also aim to fix structural problems that previous governments left behind, which saw GH¢5.68 billion in claims paid between 2020 and 2023 while debts kept piling up. These payments are part of ongoing changes to the NHIS that aim to make healthcare services more efficient, better quality, and easier to get to.
