Kennedy Agyapong Touted as NPP’s Most Credible, Electable Flagbearer Ahead of Jan 31 Poll

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gets ready to pick its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, some members are backing former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, saying he is the best choice among the five candidates.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association, spoke on behalf of Mr. Agyapong’s campaign and called him the “most credible and risk-minimizing” candidate. He said that Mr. Agyapong has a lot of appeal that goes beyond the NPP’s usual base, and he gets support from people who don’t usually vote for the NPP and even people who are in the opposition.

Mr. Nyantakyi said that Mr. Agyapong’s case is stronger because he is not as close to the NPP government that lost the 2024 elections. He said this gives him a “clean slate” compared to other candidates who were in that government.

He also said that Mr. Agyapong’s strong stance against corruption, direct way of speaking, charitable work, and focus on creating jobs and fighting unemployment appeal to a wide range of voters. He says that these traits make Mr. Agyapong especially appealing to young people, people who work in the informal sector, and voters who don’t belong to any party as the NPP looks ahead to the 2028 general election.
