NO RETIREMENT, NO BREAK — Mahama Keeps Yohuno in the Hot Seat!

Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has been given a two-year extension to his contract by President John Mahama. As a result, he will be able to continue serving as the head of the Ghana Police Service even until his mandatory retirement date in December 2025.The formal letter that was signed by [name] and that included the communication of the decision is as follows:
The Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, adheres to a suggestion that was made by the Police Council. The letter indicates that Mr. Yohuno will resume his position as IGP and continue to fulfill all of the responsibilities that come with the position starting on the twenty-eighth day of December 2025, when the re-engagement takes effect. The president made the claim that it is vital to extend the program in order to guarantee that there would be continuity, stability, and the consolidation of the changes that are now taking place inside the Service. The letter went on to say, “The Council’s unwavering conviction that your continued leadership is indispensable for the maintenance of ongoing reforms, the improvement of operational effectiveness, and the assurance of stability within the Ghana Police Service during this crucial time is reflected in the President’s decision.” The Inspector-General has been requested to provide written confirmation of his acceptance of the renewed appointment within a period of three days from the time he receives the message. Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was succeeded by Mr. Yohuno, who was appointed as Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Mahama on March 13, 2025. This appointment was made in collaboration with the Council of State, and Mr. Yohuno was officially sworn in the following day. He held the position of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, where he was responsible for overseeing operations. This was the duty that he took on in July of 2024, when Nana Akufo-Addo was still president. The extension, if it is approved, would allow him to remain in command until the year 2027, a time frame that is anticipated to be very important in terms of the stability of the institution of law enforcement and institutional transformation.
